Man arrested in ‘very violent’ abduction of Wanzhen Lu, who’s still missing | CBC News

A 35-year-old man from Toronto has been arrested in the abduction of Wanzhen Lu, but Lu still has not been found, York Regional Police say.

In a release, police said that the unnamed man was arrested early Tuesday morning. At this point, he has not been charged.

According to police, Lu was forced into a van by three masked men in the parking garage of his Markham, Ont., condo building at about 6 p.m. ET Saturday. A fourth suspect drove the vehicle.

It’s not yet clear if the man who was arrested is one of the four suspects seen in the surveillance footage of the abduction.

“It’s only a matter of time, essentially, for us that we start to get closer to who these people are,” said York Regional Police spokesperson Laura Nicolle in an interview with CBC Toronto.

Shocked by stun gun, dragged into van

She said investigators from a variety of York units, including homicide, missing persons, canine, and organized crime, are working hard on the case.

Lu was walking with a female friend in the underground parking garage of his building on Saturday when the three men approached him.

York police Const. Andy Pattenden described what happened next as a “very violent attack” in which Lu struggled and was shocked a number of times with a stun gun carried by one of the men.

He was pulled into the waiting van “100 per cent against his will,” said Pattenden.

Investigators have since located that van thanks to a tip from a member of the public, but would say only that it was found somewhere in Toronto and is being combed for clues.

Pattenden said police are baffled by the incident and don’t yet know the motive for the abduction. They’ve heard nothing from the suspects, including about a ransom or any other demands.

Studying in Toronto

Little is known about Lu except that he is a student in Toronto and goes by the English name “Peter.”

Pattenden said Lu’s parents have arrived from China and are “traumatized” by their son’s abduction.

Police have also said the female friend he was walking with at the time of the abduction was unhurt, and that she is working with police.

Officers are again asking the remaining suspects to give themselves up to police.

“We’re strongly urging the additional suspects to release him unharmed and to seek some legal counsel and turn themselves in,” said Nicolle on Tuesday.
